BEAT YOUR SHANK

Not just for me this one, honest, but once someone starts shanking they often hit several more once they get it in their mind. How can you block the image of seeing yourself shank the ball?

It is my experience, working with players at all levels, that their shotmaking is for the most part, very precise and consistent with 'whatever they have in their mind'. Despite indignant protestations to the contrary. The better they are at conjuring up intrusive thoughts, words, images, sounds and feelings, of the predominately negative, 'gremlins', 'don't want', or 'trying hard to avoid' memories and expectation of a variety of bad shots (shanking, topping, hooking, slicing, etc.) or hitting unwanted targets (hazards, water, deep rough bunkers, etc.), the greater likelihood that is precisely what they will get.

Those players with strong recollections of past underperformance ('unlucky' shots, targets, holes, courses, etc), expect history to repeat itself, and it does. Whilst there are many ways to rid yourself, block out or scramble unwanted images in your 'minds-eye' of shanking, or any other rogue shots for that matter, I have selected just three simple techniques you can try. Be absolutely sure you do not want any of these memories, since all these techniques work. You may find just one will work magic for you, or you may need to try all three, in any sequence you choose.

As you sit in your armchair relaxing, call up a vivid still picture (like a 2D photograph or 3D holograph) or a movie, in your 'minds-eye' (and/or words, sounds, feelings, etc) of a specific event when you shanked (or whatever) your shot. And repeat for every other significant similar memory, until you have no significant memories remaining.

  1. Just black or white out the entire shanking picture
  2. Run your movie of a past shanking event backwards at high speed
  3. Pull apart, alter or fragment the finer distinctions of your shanking 'internal representation' of inner pictures, sounds, words, feelings, etc. For pictures, if for example; in colour change to black and white, if life-size make bigger or smaller, if near move away, etc. As last resort, if you are seriously determined to erase this memory, quickly go right out to the limits on one or more of these distinctions, this will literally 'blow-out' the unwanted memory.

Since you get what you pay attention to, start building a memory bank of seeing, hearing and feeling 'what you want' of perfect/excellent/good shots, within or even stretching your skills capability. This will dramatically increase your probability of hitting the shots you want. As you sit calmly relaxing in your armchair on a cold winters evening dreaming of future rounds. Just let your mind drift off, and see, hear and feel, in the most intense way you can, your finest playing moments, your best shots, most enjoyable rounds, most satisfying tournament wins, etc. In this way you will begin to really control and master your own playing mind.
